Timelapse’s second panel discussion event in the Secrets to Scaling series, Design-Driven Growth, brought out many designers, marketers, and entrepreneurs in the Bay Area. Attendees had the chance to network, enjoy some delicious snacks and drinks, and most importantly hear our panelists discuss how to find, scale, and influence with design. Running from 6.00-8.30pm on Tuesday, July 17th, the event was an excellent opportunity to learn from industry experts and debate the meaning and methodologies behind Design.

Check-in + Social Hour

To kickoff the event, guests entered The Vault and were greeted with smiles from our fabulous Art Director, Jude. For those of you who don’t know, The Vault is a global “full stack innovative ecosystem” targeted towards start-ups that also provides a space for hosting events and collaborative working. From there, guests were guided downstairs to enjoy a social networking session from 6.00-6.45pm, which included complimentary snacks and drinks.

Many delicious food platters were provided, including a meat + cheese board, caprese salad, fruit display, veggie + hummus display, and salsa + guacamole + chips. A variety of soft drinks, wine, and beer options were also available for guests – the Pinot Grigio was by far the crowd favorite.

Kahoot + Panel

Alas, it was time to hear from the panelists. But first, attendees were encouraged to participate in a game of Kahoot. To fill you in, Kahoot is a real time interactive app and platform where participants can answer questions created by the host via their mobile device. Overall, the game served as an excellent icebreaker and introduction to the topics that would soon be covered by the Panelists.

Next up was the panel discussion. Our Panelists included Andrew Bellay, Dan Read, and our very own Olivier Roth.

Andrew Bellay attended Stanford University for his Master of Science in Management Science and Engineering, and The University of Texas for his BS in Chemical Engineering.  Andrew then went on to found, MetaNeer Labs, and has  launched dozens of successful projects since 2010. Some of his clients including ExxonMobile, UCSF, and Stanford University. Prior to that he helped form over 220 start-ups at FounderSoup which was backed by both Andreessen Horowitz and Stanford University.

Originally from the UK, Dan Read studied Interaction Design at Ravensbourne College in London. He then worked for companies such as Momentum, McCann and DDB, covering everything from 40kb animated banner development, to brand strategy and marketing campaigns for global bluechip companies. Dan currently works as a Design Strategist for IDEO, working for some of the biggest tech brands in the world.

Olivier studied Marketing and Design Management at ESCP Europe in Paris and later in China. After starting his career at HAVAS and later at a french pharma company, he succesufully founded, Timelapse, a Creative Agency here in San Francisco. Since then Olivier has had the opportunity to work with a variety of clients from high-growth start-ups to more established companies such as Stanford University and Lyft.

The panelists discussed and debated topics such as:

-How do you define “design” in your world?

-To you, how can design directly, or indirectly impact growth?

-To your mind, what are the biggest mistakes to avoid in the design process?

-Do you follow design trends?

The most surprising answers came from the last question “Do you follow design trends?”. Each of the panelists answered that they in fact do NOT follow design trends, and instead focus on staying ahead of the competition.

To conclude, the floor was opened up to the audience for a Q&A.

For further discussions and to meet the panelists, there was another networking session from 7.45-8.30pm with more (yummy!) complementary snacks and drinks. This is was an excellent time for audience members and panelists to break off and dig deeper into some of the topics covered in the panel discussion.
